PART 1 WRITING AN EMAIL

PET EXAMINATION. TIPS.

Part 1 (email) + Part 2 (article or story) = 45 minutes

• Part 1 (email) - You have to write a short message (100 words)

· Structure

The message must contain three main points: thank, invite, suggest, explain, apologise, ...
You should open and close the message properly

· Vocabulary and expressions

Thanking someone:

• Thank you
• Thanks for ...
• It was very kind of you to invite me...

Explaining why you can't do something:

• I can't come to your party because ...
• I have to study for my exams and I ...
• Since I'm very busy I can't ...
• I'm sorry but I can't go with you because ...

Inviting someone:

• I'm going to the swimming pool tomorrow. Would you like to come?
• I'm going to the swimming pool tomorrow. I'd like you to come.

Apologising:

• I'm sorry for breaking your camera.
• I'm sorry for arriving late.
• I'm sorry for ...

Suggesting something:

• Why don't we go to the cinema?
• How about going to the cinema?
• What about going to the cinema?
• Shall we go to the cinema?

Open the message:

• Dear ...,
• Hello ...,
• Hi ...,

Close the message:

• Best wishes,
• All the best,
• Yours,
• Love,
• See you soon,

· EXAMPLE:

From: Sandy

Subject: Your visit

I'm so excited that you are coming to say with me for a week. - Answer: Me too!!

On your first evening here there is a rock concert in our town. Would you like to go to the concert or do you prefer us to relax at home? - Answer: Say which I prefer. 

Also, shall we go climbing in the mountains while you are here? - Answer: No, because... 

Let me know if you have any questions. - Answer: Ask Sandy...

SAMPLE ANSWER:

Dear Sandy,

I am also extremely excited about my visit!! I am looking forward to spending some time with you.

My journey will be long, but I guess/think/consider going to a concert with can be a great idea and I will enjoy it a lot. We can relax some other day!

I must admit that I am not very keen on climbing, so we could probably do some other kind of  activity while I am there. I am not an adventurous person!

Will you be able to pick me up at the airport or shall I take a taxi?
